Ultimate Frisbee Nationals

Is happening tomorrow!
More details here.

If you are in CT, come by Bergvliet on Sat or Sun this weekend and watch the best (and only) teams in SA compete for the SA National title. There is even a Maputo team coming through. My team are the current champs (Cape Disc Doctors) ... will we be able to retain our title?
This is THE chance to come and see what Ultimate is about (and even join us for the 80's themed party tomorrow night).

Soooo looking forward to it. We've been practicing most of this year, and had a carbo-loading pasta party last night. Good times!

CPE is...

...all consuming,
exhausting,
fulfilling
&challenging.

With two verbatims a week, daily reflections and assignments due, you can guess for yourself why the writing on this state of gareth has slowed to a trickle. Tomorrow starts a 4 day long weekend, so in between writing another verbatim, a genogram and partying it up at Balkanology (I need a party!), i'll try post some insights and news from the CPE front. All i can say for now is that it is really really worthwhile, i'm learning tons about myself, and trying to get in touch with my feelings.

Friday is for pizza tips

I got home from the hospital early today and decided to make a pizza. All I could find as toppings were mozzarella, mushroom, green pepper and some home grown origanum (oregano). Being the daring-in-the-kitchen type of guy I am, I thought some rocket (arugula) and watercress leaves would finish it off perfectly. Trust me, I have seen rocket as a pizza ingredient before. Maybe not watercress, but it was worth a shot.
I didn’t want the leaves to burn, so I put the vegetables and greens down on the base first, and then the mozzarella. Into the oven it went and… out it came, not as planned. The mushrooms and peppers were medium rare and the leaves were burnt and crispy.

Drat!

So, for our Friday pizza tips, what do we learn from this story?
1. Mushrooms and peppers do better on top of the cheese; and,
2. If you want to add green leaves to a pizza, do it after you have baked the pizza.
Unless, or course, small carcinogenic crispy leaves with watery mushrooms are your thing.

And I bet you never thought you would learn that today?

double good news

South Africa, the Good News is a website that recently made it onto my Bloglines feedreader roll. It helps to counteract the (bad) news that the press throws at me daily. Two recent entries caught my eye today:

  • A Restorative Justice pilot project in a township in KwaZulu Natal - I'm a big fan of restorative justice, and think this is a great project. Here's a line in the opening paragraph of the article that also made me think:
"I heard someone once say that our townships were designed to be “bastions of apartheid control” but with the advent of democracy, they have become “fortresses of criminal control”
  • Secondly, a piece on "The Most Beautiful Object in SA". Need i say more?
Another good news site to watch is makenewsgood.co.za which has just been launched by Jo Higgs, a friend of Julie&I. She's involved in video journalism and also wants to see a change in the way news is reported and the belief that only bad news sells. I agree!
